With over 14 years of combined government employment in New York State, Arizona State, Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Prisons in California—Lea Vasquez has built a career rooted in purpose, public service, and community impact.
In 2015, she was employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where she worked as one of the supervisors in UNICOR, the federal prison industry program. In this capacity, she not only helped manage daily operations but also played an integral part in providing critical opportunities for individuals to secure meaningful employment—both during their incarceration and after their release—directly supporting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.
After relocating to the Bay Area and reflecting on housing challenges faced by its residents, in 2022 she joined Berkeley Food and Housing Project (BFHP), also known as Insight Housing, committed to supporting displaced veterans and their families across the region.
"I will forever be grateful to BFHP and Insight Housing for allowing me to be part of their dynamic team," Lea says.
"I've never worked with a group of individuals who care so deeply about their community. As I transition to a new chapter of my career to learn about the quality of water, I will always carry the mission and memories of Berkeley Food and Housing close to my heart."
“It has been an honor to help assist our Veterans, hear their stories, and let them know they are not forgotten.”
